Aerobic activity |
A type of exercise that is designed to make you fitter. When you do aerobic exercise, your heart rate and breathing increase. For example, brisk walking, swimming, running, or cycling. |
Biologic injections |
These are a type of disease modifying drugs which are made from proteins produced by the body. They are designed to stop or slow the damage that inflammation can cause. |
Cardiovascular disease |
When you have a health problem to do with your heart or blood vessels. For example, having a heart attack or stroke. |
Inflammation |
The bodies defence mechanism or immune response to defend against things that may harm it. For example, infection. It can cause pain, redness, swelling, loss of function and heat. |
Joint replacement |
When someone has an operation to be given a new man-made artificial joint, sometimes known as a prosthesis, for example, a knee replacement. The operation is usually done to help with pain and damage from arthritis. |
Methotrexate |
Is a type of medicine called a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug or sometimes referred to as DMARD. It works by slowing your immune system to stop it from producing as much inflammation. |
Mobility exercises |
Mobility exercises help increase the range of movements your body can perform, including your bendability and balance. They may improve your ability to do everyday tasks such as putting on your shoes and socks or reaching into a cupboard. |
Occupational therapist |
A therapist who can help improve your ability to do everyday tasks if they have become problematic. For example, getting washed and dressed or cooking. |
Psoriasis |
A skin condition that causes red patches of skin covered with silvery scales. |
Psoriatic arthritis |
A chronic type of arthritis, known as inflammatory arthritis, that affects some people with psoriasis. It mainly causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness. |
